When I see the ‘Devil’ on TV, or in any media, he has both reptilian and human features. He’s scaly with claws and horns, but there’s a touch of Man there too. How shall we represent ‘evil?’ There’s got to be a bit of human in the mix, otherwise how could we relate to the image?
I stared up at the door to see the numbers had fallen, and there it was…666
But what about the reptile part? This must come from our ancient mammalian ancestors, the furry little ones who lived in terror, cowering whilst the dinosaurs or ‘great lizards’ roamed the planet.
They’ve passed it on to us, this horror of anything reptilian, and we added in ourselves to come up with the final image of ‘the Beast.’ Remember that within each human there are really three parts to the patchwork called the brain, the reptilian, mammal and the most recent bit which we could call human.
I’m told we need the Devil, for how else are we to explain the badness, the cruelties in this world? It must be Him. He’s behind all this. But to me the question is absurd. We should not ask why there is so much ‘evil’ in the world for the answer stares us in the face. Put together countless organisms, each striving to replicate their DNA, confined to a rock hurtling around a fireball and there with limited resources. What shall we see? A picnic?
No, the real question is: Is there true goodness here? Does it exist at all? Rare for sure, but I think it does. How are we to explain an Albert Schweitzer, a Spinoza, Socrates, Jesus?
How can there be genuine kindness in a place described by the Sage as this, ‘battleground of tormented, agonized beings who devour each other for survival?’
This is the question.
I was in hotel room 999 sitting on the edge of the bed. The bar, the women, beckoned. Down I went. I may have slammed the door too hard. When I returned (not alone), after having committed a number of ‘sins,’ I stared up at the door to see the numbers had fallen, and there it was…666. But I smiled, because I knew.
Roman legions were sent to Judea to put down a revolt. The action ended with the destruction of Jerusalem’s Second Temple.
In Hebrew I understand that each letter of the alphabet corresponds to a number. In the book of John we find the reference to the Beast as ’666.’ In Hebrew 666 spells out this:
